Costume Designer
London-born Joanna Eatwell is a Theatre Design graduate of Wimbledon School of Art with a career in Costume Design spanning four decades and over 50 productions. In that time, Joanna has received four BAFTA nominations, two Emmy nominations, one Costume Designers Guild nomination, an RTS award, and two RTS nominations.
Period costume has been Joanna’s focus for some years now, and it was on the BBC television film ‘Eric and Ernie’ that she gained her first BAFTA and RTS nominations. Her work with Peter Kosminsky on Wolf Hall secured a second BAFTA nomination and her first Emmy nomination. Joanna won her first RTS award and yet another BAFTA nomination for Ridley Scott’s hugely popular ‘Taboo‘ with Tom Hardy.
Joanna’s foray into fantasy on Amazon Prime’s dystopian Victorian drama ‘Carnival Row‘ gained her a Costume Designers Guild nomination and a second Emmy nomination, and her work on ‘Beecham House‘, filmed entirely on location in India, garnered her fourth BAFTA nomination.
Joanna’s most recent work on Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light was the fourth time she collaborated with director Peter Kosminsky, with the costume design receiving critical acclaim from Tatler Magazine, The National Portrait Gallery, and The Guardian.
Joanna has worked with many high-profile creatives on a varied catalogue of productions. It was on Einstein & Eddington that Joanna first met Andy Serkis, leading to further collaboration on Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, Steven Knight’s A Christmas Carol and Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage.
Joanna and director Peter Kosminsky have collaborated on four productions over ten years, first working together on the controversial Channel 4 drama ‘The Promise’, filmed in the Middle East. After designing the gritty period drama ‘The Mill‘, Joanna became director James Hawes’ trusted designer for his period costume projects, which led to further collaboration on the moving holocaust film ‘One Life‘ with Sir Anthony Hopkins.
Joanna has also designed many high-profile pop promos for The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Queen, Elton John, Kiss, AC/DC, Iggy Pop, Wham, Boy George and Culture Club, Bananarama, Spandau Ballet, Phil Oakey, The Bee Gees, Rod Stewert, Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, Duran Duran, Ray Davies, Holly Johnson, Tom Verlaine, Feargal Sharkey, Millie Jackson, Go West, Leo Sayer, Bronski Beat, Art of Noise, Arcadia, Daryl Hall, Chris Rea, UB 40, and many other acclaimed musicians.
