Director of Photography
Maria Sarasvati Herrera is a French-Mexican cinematographer born in Mexico City who has built a visually stimulating and impressive body of work. Her latest series, Netflix’s highly-anticipated eight-episode series, One Hundred Years of Solitude, was worldly reviewed as visually stunning by top critics and reviews.
The series is based on Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez’s best-selling and epic novel, widely considered as a Latin American literary classic. Herrera worked with the creative team to create a special look for the periods covered in her episodes, 4, 5 and 6.
Herrera also lensed the main unit cinematography for episodes 5 and 6 of the hit Apple TV+ series Women in Blue (Las Azules), alongside shooting second unit for the entirety of the show. The show follows the first four women to join Mexico’s police force in the 70s and was also highly reviewed by top critics.
Her past work in television includes Netflix’s The Most Beautiful Flower (2022), for which she lensed all ten episodes of the award-winning comedy series.
Herrera’s work has screened at film festivals globally, including the Guadalajara International Film Festival in 2024, where her film The Muleteer, received best Cinematography and Director (Mezcal Award).
In 2020, her second feature film, Summer White, premiered at Sundance Film Festival and won the Best Film Award at the Málaga Film Festival.
With earlier works, Maria was selected in Berlinale Talents Berlin in 2014 and 2016. In 2010, her work on the shortfilm El vacío was nominated for a Golden Tadpole at the prestigious Camerimage International Film Festival, within the Student Etude Competition.
Herrera graduated from the University Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica with a focus in Cinematography.
