Joerg Widmer

Director of Photography

Jörg Widmer was born and raised in Tübingen, Germany.

After having worked as an assistant photographer for 6 years in fashion, stills and car photography, he started his filming career with an internship at a broadcast company. There he discovered Steadicam and had the chance to explore its use profoundly.

His skills and working with directors like Wim Wenders, Michelangelo Antonioni, Steven Spielberg, Wolfgang Becker and Tom Tykwer made him soon one of the best known Steadicam operators worldwide. He became A- or B-camera operator on movies like ELISA (Dir. Jean Becker), LES ANGES GUARDIENS (Dir. Jean-Marie Poiré) and AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN PARIS (also 2nd unit DoP) (Dir. Anthony Waller) but also went to work as cinematographer, mostly for movies and tv movies.

One of his DoP work, BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB directed by Wim Wenders, turned out to be a huge success and was even nominated for an Academy Award. Jörg enjoyed also working as a 2nd unit DoP on movies such as BABEL (Dir. Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu), TREE OF LIFE (Dir. Terrence Malick) and THE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (Dir. Christophe Gans).

After a couple other films together in various positions, Terrence Malick asked him to shoot his latest films A HIDDEN LIFE, released in 2018 and WAY OF THE WIND, supposed to be released in 2025.
