Director of Photography
Alonso was born in Veracruz, Mexico, where he lived until the age of 18. He moved to New York City to get his Bachelor’s Degree in Film & Video at The School of Visual Arts, where he specialized in Cinematography.
Upon graduation, he began his career as a Digital Imaging Technician for film and television. Given his expertise in the newest camera technology, he had the opportunity to work with such luminaries as Martin Scorsese (Public Speaking, 2009), Doug Liman, Sean Penn and Naomi Watts (Fair Game, 2009), Derek Cianfrance, Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine, 2010) amongst many others.
In 2011, he dove into Stereography, specifically dealing with live action 3D image capturing through the use of dual-camera stereoscopic rigs. Alonso quickly became one of the most innovative voices in the 3D field and worked on many TV shows for the Discovery channel (such as Oceana Air Show and Ghost Lab) and a few independent movies (Hellbenders, Long Day Journey) before getting to work with director Baz Luhrmann on the Oscar-winning movie The Great Gatsby, in 2013. During the 4-month shoot in Australia, Alonso worked as the head of the 3D department closely collaborating with Mr. Luhrmann and Cinematographer Simon Duggan.
After his return from Australia, it was time for him to focus fully on cinematography. He became a founding partner at Bakeshop Media, a production company specialized in branded content. The company did work for creative agencies such as Saatchi & Saatchi, Anomaly and Global Hue. In 2013, he lensed the feature film La Luciernaga which was shot on location in Bogota, Colombia. The film would later on be nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Madrid International Film Festival.
In 2014, Alonso moved to Los Angeles as he was hired by BuzzFeed to help build their branded content department. He filmed dozens of commercials for such companies as: Coca-Cola, Google, Disney, Nestle, Target, and many more.
In 2020, he decided to focus his career back to feature films and he has been the cinematographer for 13 films over 3 and a half years. Recently, The Collective, features Don Johnson and Tyrese Gibson. And scheduled to be released later 2024, The Girl In the Pool, starring Freddie Prinze Jr, Monica Potter, and Kevin Pollak.
