Production Designer
Sonja Klaus is an Internationally recognized award-winning Production Designer, designing Feature Films, Television Drama, Commercials, pop promos and large-scale events. The latter took her into an exciting world of product press launches, World-wide Film premiers and many private large-scale parties and weddings. She has featured in many publications including Variety, Architectural Digest and Elle Decoration.
Sonja’s Design career took off after accepting a job working on a low budget film starring Peter Capaldi and Richard Wilson. In 1999, Sonja was asked to become Set Decorator for Sir Ridley Scott on his Academy Award Winning film Gladiator.(Nominated for an Academy award and Winner of a BAFTA award for Design ) The trust and rapport between Ridley Scott and Sonja created a lasting collaboration which included Kingdom of Heaven, American Gangster (nominated for an Academy award for Design), Body of Lies, Robin Hood, Prometheus and The Counselor. Other Set Decorating Roles includingTomb Raider 1 and 2, Five Children and It, The Odyssey, Merlin, Alice in Wonderland and with Mathew Vaughn X Men First Class. Sonja then started to concentrate on purely Production Designing and her film credits include A Good Year directed by Sir Ridley Scott, starring Russell Crowe, Marion Cotillard, Freddy Highmore and Albert Finney, Babylon AD directed by Mathieu Kassovitz, starring Vin Diesel, In Darkness directed by Anthony Byrne starring Nathalie Dormer and The Aftermath directed by James Kent. starring Keira Knightly and Alexander Skarsgard. In 2015/16 she designed the fantastic Scott Free/FX 8-part series Taboo for BBC1, featuring Tom Hardy with a high-end cast. This show won her a British Film Designers Guild design award. Sonja worked with Tim Miller (Director of Deadpool) on the Feature Terminator Dark Fate starring Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger which was produced by James Cameron. She and then went on to Design A Christmas Carol, for Scott Free/FX. During Covid Sonja worked on the 10-part series The Power for Amazon which took three years to complete because of the pandemic stoppages! She then designed the 6 Part Series of Great Expectations for Scott Free/ FX and Disney starring Olivia Coleman. For this show Sonja was nominated for Best Production Design at the British Film Designers awards.
She is an active member of BAFTA and AMPAS (sitting on the European Events Committee) and was Chair of the BFDG for the last two years, plus she also mentors for several Universities in Film and Television Design.
