Director of Photography
Matthias Grunsky is an internationally working cinematographer whose quiet yet expressive visual language has been praised by The New Yorker, Cahiers du Cinéma, and Variety for its “ravishing black-and-white imagery,” “daring camerawork,” and “Rembrandt-like chiaroscuro lighting.”
Grunsky has collaborated with director Andrew Bujalski on eight feature films, including Computer Chess (2013), which earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Cinematography. His recent work includes Edgar Reitz’s Leibniz (Berlinale 2025), for which he created baroque-inspired chiaroscuro lighting. His films have premiered at Sundance, Berlinale, Tribeca, and SXSW, and he has received Best Cinematography awards from the Midwest Independent Film Festival and the History Film Fest Rijeka.
